Mallory Zhan
Researcher and Just Transition Advocate
she, her, hers

“Care cannot stop at the boundaries of my personal or professional circles. Leadership, to me, means extending care to strangers near and far, recognizing our shared humanity, and acting with a sense of duty to those with fewer resources or opportunities.”
Mallory Zhan is a researcher and climate justice advocate who concentrates on urban consumption and environmental practices, with a particular focus on China. Her work explores conditions and drivers for fair and sustainable consumption in numerous economies.
Mallory’s current projects address the inequalities in carbon emissions between different groups and communities, highlighting how the wealthiest individuals disproportionately contribute to the climate crisis through excessive consumption. In collaboration with grassroots initiatives, these projects seek to cultivate practical solutions to promote equitable consumption. Mallory holds a PhD in environment and sustainable development from the University of Geneva, and her work has been published in leading academic journals in the fields of environmental politics and consumption studies.
Mallory believes that bold, collective, and long-term grassroots efforts are essential for dismantling systems of inequality that affect both historically excluded communities and the environment. Through active, communal civic engagement, all people can discover their collective power, reclaim their agency, foster hope for the future, and safeguard human and planetary well-being.
