A new video for the acoustic version of Aloe Blacc’s hit song “Wake Me Up”—No. 1 in more than 100 countries—tells the story of a day laborer family striving for a better life and struggling to be united across borders.

To create this powerful video, Blacc collaborated with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), a grantee of both our Protecting Immigrant and Migrant Rights, and Promoting the Next Generation Workforce Strategies initiatives. NDLON worked with actors whose real-life experiences with immigration give a human face to the current debate and send a message of inclusion to Washington.

The video’s main characters are Hareth Andrade, a leader in the immigrant youth movement working to stop her own father’s deportation, Agustín Chiprez Alvarez, a Los Angeles day laborer, and Margarita Reyes, who was deported with her mother as a child despite being born in the US.

“When people get to tell their own stories, art and life converge,” explains Pablo Alvarado, director of NDLON. “With the video, Aloe’s song becomes a soundtrack for the moment and shows the world that both day laborers and dreamers are deserving of respect and inclusion.”
